How can we stop crime and violence in Jamaica? Community members are encouraged to be responsible for their own security and the security of others, to uphold the law and report criminal activities. Crime Prevention is not only the responsibility of the law enforcement agencies, but the responsibility of the entire community.

Start hanging all these gutless murders

  • Emmanuel says:

I have to go to Jamaica in November with my family for a wedding, but am scared out of my mind. The place where I grew up are seeing record amount of murders.

    • Henley Taylor says:

I think you should go don’t let gum man stop you from going to your beautiful island. If you have to stop
at the hotel, then go to the wedding then go back to the hotel. don’t let them stop you we need to stand up and defend our country.

  • Henley Taylor says:

    Jamaican never Give Up…………………….
Go over, go under, go around, or go through. But never give up.This is our Island and we all need to help the police one way or another to do the right thing. The country need a over hall Flankers my God… Montego bay and Kingston God help us.

    Emmanuel,

If I were you, I would NOT go to Jamaica. I’m originally from Jamaica, but now live in the states. I was in Jamaica last month along with my uncle to attend a funeral of a relative. My uncle went into a bar to have a drink and a gunman went up to him and shot him in this throat. Killing him instantly. Another person was shot and kill outside the bar.

My uncle is a law abiding citizen. He does not visit Jamaica often and he has never been in trouble with the law. Either in Jamaica or the states. He does not do drugs and he is a very peaceful person. So, there is no need for him to be executed like he did.

I’ve very little hope that the perpetrator will be brought to justice, because this is open/shut case. There were witnesses to both murders, yet the cops cannot find the perpetrator.

Jamaica is not the peaceful place I once knew before migrating. It is now a failed state, just like other failed state such as Haiti. So, if you value your life stay away from Jamaica.

Where do you live now? Jamaica isn’t any better than some states in America. Any where you go there are gunmen. Unfortunately Jamaica is a small island so it’s more pronounce but we don’t need to bash the island but help the problem. We live in a cruel world and unfortunately Jamaica right now a go through some hard times but at least election times are a little bit better than in the early 80s when I was living there.

I understand your anger and do sympathize with you greatly. I wish you and your family much peace and love.

      Be safe and One Love!

I was born in Jamaica, grew up there for 27 yrs then left to live in the UK. I have been back there last year and it was the best thing ever. I enjoyed myself to the fullest , no problem and my kids loved it so much that we decide to return every year… I felt safer in JAMAICA with my kids all over the neighbour hood more than in London, I would never ever leave the kids outside watching them constant. In ja they had FREEDOM to the fulliest, I wish my kids could live there and go to school as I always loved the decipline we had in school and the right to our religion ( christianity). Despite the the violence and the bad press Jamaica gets and unfortunately the experience of the Jasper (above) I LOVE MY COUNTRY AND WILL NEVER ACCEPT A BAD PRESS AS PEOPLE BEHAVE THE SAME WHERE IN EVERY COUNTRY. When I am in Jamaica I was never singled out as being Black or never kept being reminded of my colour as in London… I have never seen drugs in JA but i have seen police running down young men in London and arresting them for possesion , this happen in the normal streets… overall I would never put a foreign country over mine..The best thing about Jamaica is the calm and relaxed attitude of the normal everyday people. I came to London and never knewe people could be off from work so easy and often and the complain is usually STRESS..i have never seen or heard of this sickness in any work place in Jamaica..

      • Jasper says:

Tia, I’m glad you and your kids had such a wonderful time in Ja. The fact remain that Jamaica is a very violent country. Maybe you just got lucky that you weren’t affected by the violence. But, I’m sure your life will be touched in someway if you decide to visit annually or even move to the island. Either yourself, friends or relative will be affected. No, country is perfect or crime free. But the level of violence in Jamaica is horrendous for a small island. The criminal get away with crimes, because there isn’t strict enough penalties. And the community protect these criminals because they don’t want be viewed as a “informer” or if they do inform they feel the law will not protect them.

If the crime does not reduce in Jamaica, I will continue to pick a foreign country over Ja. What’s the sense of praising a country that you cannot feel safe in.

I believe that more jobs need to be provided for the jamaican youths. They need more options as to how to make a better life for themselves other than crime. If more opportunities are created for the lower class there will no doubt be a decrease in the crime rate. The governments needs to provide economic/educational and employment opportunities. If this is not provided what are the youths supposed to do…

  • jasper says:

I live in Atlanta. I do agree that there are plenty of crimes here in the states, especially in Atlanta. But you cannot ignore the fact that Jamaica has the third highest crime rate per capital in the world. Even higher than the USA. Check the facts yourself at: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur_percap-crime-murders-per-capita#rest.
I’ve posted some solutions to Ja problems at this link in response to another brutal incident. http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/news/html/20090806T230000-0500_156953_OBS_BRUTALITY__.asp?offset=145#comments
    Thank you for your condolences.

    Education Folks!

What do you expect when we are teaching our children that having a mattic and an uzi and shot someone dead is ok? We teach our kids to be murderers and expect them to Lawyers, Teacher, Nurses and Doctors; get real, what you sow is what you reap.

Let start sowing new seeds; teach our kids to have a positive outlook on life, thing are hard everywhere you go but if you are persistent, motivated and have an education you will prevail.

    Role models are not criminals….

  • Noel says:

The Prime Minister needs to declare an all-out war on these criminals. When are we going to realize that this country is at war? People we cannot afford for the criminals to run free and creating havoc on the entire nation. Involve, Inform, Inspire

  • AJ says:

Murders in Jamaica is becoming so normal these days, its like owning a cell phone. The people of Jamaica is accepting it as a way of life instead of finding solutions to curb it.

  • Denise says:

i agree with you…the people are too scared to talk

  • shev says:

I kno these ppl need to be inprisioned but so do have of the ja police department, if we are going to change jamaica in any way we first need to fix the f-d up system…………does any1 kno an organization i can get involved in?

  • Joseph says:

Jamaica is a hell hole; I just can’t believe the mentality of the people. They seem to think that killing another person is a solution to a problem. “WAKE UP YOU BUNCH OF IDIOTS” I think you all need to be slaves again!!

    • Paddy says:

Joseph, you’re a fool. You can’t condemn an entire nation for the actions of a tiny minority. It’s poverty that begets violence, not nationality or skin colour. Take your small mind elsewhere if you’re not going to add to the discussion.

  • rudie says:

anyone who tries to compare what is happening in jamaica to any state in the united states does not even slightly understand what is happening there. no state in the united states can people walk/drive around and kill without worrying about being caught. NONE!!

  • D says:

Jamaica is still beautiful, but there are some very corruptd influences and the Govt. is not providing any infra-structure for the youth. Jamicans tend look to the wrong source for quality of life…they first need to do some soul searching…..To create a better society everyone needs to do there part….The bad part is none of the people affected will be reading this comment or yours. I will never give up on my Island, but we need collective forces to say we will not stand for lawlessness anymore. God Bless Jamdung.
